We Are Off!
Having always turned left when entering a flight it was a new experience to turn right! Your Nest Egg going from being Ostrich size to Quail has all sorts of repercussions.
We departed Brisbane last night at 23.20 with Malaysian Airlines in ‘cattle class’ and were pleasantly surprised. Their Airbus 300-323X took a mere 8 hours to reach Kuala Lumpur and whilst a little cramped was a much better experience than we had expected. Immigration was a breeze and Customs was almost non-existent at 5.15 in the morning.
Our driver and car arranged for us by The French Hotel Ipoh was waiting and whisked us away, arriving at the hotel in Ipoh at 8am. It cost 300 Malaysian Ringgit (RM) or a little over $100 Australian Dollars (AUD) but was worth every bit of it! I can recommend this over the train or bus after a night flight from OZ. Hard to believe that less than 12 hours after leaving Brisbane we were sipping a cup of tea in Ipoh!
After ‘nana nap, the sights, sounds and smells of Asia regale us as we step out onto the street. At last we are excited and stimulated again. We headed off to buy famous Ipoh Salted Chicken from Aun Kheng Lim. All the locals were very friendly and helpful. The chicken cost 18 RM or $6 AUD but was sensational. It is baked in paper in salt crusts, slightly salty and smoked in flavour but still delightfully juicy. We then stopped to buy some local pastries, which were also yummy.
We also purchased a local Hotlink Sim for our mobile, which was fitted for me by the sim card shop. Rang OZ for 10 minutes and it cost $3.50 AUD mobile to mobile.
A great start to our ‘Discover Ipoh’ journey. Off on foot to The Old Town early tomorrow.
