Headed off to take guided tour of The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (The Blue Mansion)
It was an enormous house built by Malaysia’s richest man in the 19th century (incidentally he started out working for a company in Indonesia, was getting nowhere so her married the bosses daughter, got a loan from his father in law and amassed a fortune from coffee rubber and banks. He later had eight wives (the Chinese lucky number!) and married the last one when he was 74 and she 17.
His family blew all the wealth after he die in 1916 after spending and not working. The Mansion and the guide were exceptional and well worth the visit. Should not be missed when in Penang.
Swanned around the Eastern and Oriental Hotel as if we owned it (only the grounds facing the sea) could just imagine Somerset Maugham sipping a G&T here. Had good Indian lunch (tandoori Chicken and lentil Perak with roti’s) and Masala teas in Little India. Cost 22RM about A$7.70.
